Junior Soccer: Trip is talented duo’s reward
A pair of Bunbury teenagers are set to follow the sport they love overseas after being identified as among WA’s best young regional soccer talent.
Hay Park players Jasmine Wheeler, 13, and Madison Obal, 14, were last month named in the WA State Country under 15 girls team, and will later this year embark on a tour to Singapore and Malaysia to strut their stuff against other standout players.
They won their place in the side after eye-catching performances at Country Week last year, and a camp in Perth during the Easter holidays.
Jasmine conceded there had been a few nervous moments during the final stages of the selection process last month.
‘‘On the last day (of the camp), the coaches told us all what the team was.
''I was really worried actually because my name was (alphabetically) at the bottom of the list,’’ she said, ‘‘All my friends’ names were getting called out and I thought ‘Oh no, I’m not going to get picked’ but they did call it out and I was really happy.’’
Both girls play for the Hay Park under 14s in the Country Coastal Junior Soccer League.
‘‘My grandad got me into it, he’s a big soccer fan,’’ Jasmine said.
‘‘It’s really enjoyable, it’s a good thing to do on Saturday’s and it keeps you entertained.’’
Although it has not been all smooth sailing for the pair, who along with their teammates have been forced to step up and play in the under 16 division after a drop in registrations meant there were not enough girls throughout the South West to form a league for their age group.
There are a number of clubs like Hay Park in the greater Bunbury area as well as in Australind, Collie and Harvey.
