Keeping kid's art alive

Art teacher Trinity Ford said the children’s holiday art classes at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries were not the mayhem people thought they would be.

When the South Western Times visited the class at the galleries, the young artists were enthralled in making an insect out of an old stocking.

Despite the potentially messy art materials, the class of 12 were patiently listening to instructions from their teacher.

‘‘Art is the kids’ favourite subject so it’s a really nice atmosphere,’’Ms Ford said.

‘‘They love it and the kids are really talented.’’

The Narrogin teacher drives to Bunbury from her home in Williams to run the holiday classes as well as art classes during school term.

The class has been working on a Mother’s Day ‘‘ensemble’’ including pot plants and paper and cardboard flowers.

Acting galleries audience development officer Ali Drake said she was pleased the galleries were able to provide the group with space for the class.

‘‘With the rise in the use of technologies such as computers, the traditional skills run the risk of extinction,’’ Ms Drake said.

‘‘Yet here at the galleries we are keeping all art forms alive.’
