Kids helping kids in Namibia

South Western Times

A year 5 class at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School has come together in a gesture of goodwill and collected more than $15,000 worth of equipment to be sent to a school in Namibia.

When Year 5 teacher Jodie Spencer went to the !Nara School in Namibia last school holidays, she said she was shocked at the lack of resources they had.

‘‘Between 900 students, they didn’t have one ball to their name, no writing tools and no books,’’ she said.

Ms Spencer said that when the school term came back, she and her Year 5 class talked about what she’d seen.

‘‘We decided together that we would collect equipment for this school and I’d take it with me when I went back in October.’’

As a result, the students went home and collected school supplies they were not using and even bought new equipment.

‘‘By doing this, we’re helping a needier school by giving a lot of stuff,’’ student Cooper McKee said.

Ms Spencer said the students were following the school ethos by helping others.

‘‘If we can have students go home with the message of helping others, then we’ll have kind adults in the future,’’ she said.

Year 5 student Samantha Blackham said she was really excited when she went home and told her mother about the project.

The equipment includes posters, writing equipment, text books, reading books and even a computer.

The class has received sponsorship to pay for the freight costs in getting the equipment to Namibia.
