Koombana Bay patrols this summer

Swimmers at Koombana Bay will have peace of mind this summer after the City of Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club announced an extension to its patrols.

Starting this season, the club will patrol the popular family swimming beach on Sundays from 10am until 2pm.

Newly-appointed president Denise Duncan said the club wanted to improve its image as a family-oriented safety group.

“We have increased our patrolling envelope,” Mrs Duncan said.

“It is more of a formal thing than previous years, but less structured than a swim between the flags set-up.

“Given Koombana Bay is a family-friendly beach, we want to make sure everyone is safe over there.”

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said he backed the plan for patrols along Koombana Bay.

“I had discussions with surf club representatives during 2015 supporting this proposal,” Mr Brennan said.

He said facilities at the beach were a matter for the club to consider in the short term.

“The Transforming Bunbury Waterfront funding is likely to include any infrastructure needs,” he said.

“It is anticipated the volunteers would continue their much appreciated patrol work.

“In the short term I understand that all of the equipment and boats would be transported from the club premises on a daily basis.”

Mrs Duncan became president at the annual general meeting in July and said she was determined to uphold her late husband Peter’s legacy ahead of the start to the season in October.

She told theSouth Western Times she and Mr Duncan had already decided she would become president of the club for the 2015-16 season before his sudden death in June.

Mrs Duncan has been a club director for 18 seasons.

“We thought it would be a great transition for everyone,” she said.

“It gives everyone a solid foundation, especially after his passing.”

Mrs Duncan said she wanted to lead a “young and driven” board of directors.

“I wanted to use the guidance and wisdom I have to guide the next generation of directors,” she said.

The board has put in motion a plan to upgrade the kitchen and changerooms at the club, which is funded by the Bunbury City Council and Royalties for Regions.
