Bunbury City Council admits a plan to reduce the speed limit on Koombana Drive to 70kmh could be unpopular with motorists.

The council today announced the speed limit on the road would be reduced following a study from Main Roads.

According to the study, 85 per cent of motorists drove at 72.7kmh on the stretch of road rather than the 80kmh speed limit.

The study was sparked following concerns from the Bunbury Roadwise Committee.

Mayor Gary Brennan said while the decision would not be popular to all motorists, it would lead to a safer city.

“The study showed the majority of motorists do not travel at the designated speed so it seems a sensible solution to decrease it,” Mr Brennan said.

“I applaud the forward thinking actions of the Roadwise Committee.”

Work to reduce the speed limit will take place over the next eight days.
