The future of Bunbury’s Koombana North could be known by the end of the year as the State Government considers an offer to develop the site.

LandCorp confirmed it had received a conditional offer to buy the sites for development in accordance with Bunbury City Council’s planning scheme. With the first phase of Koombana North completed, the next phase is under way which plans for five buildings to be built — two along the foreshore which has already been revitalised and landscaped, as well as three between the foreshore and Koombana Drive.

LandCorp confirmed zoning for the area permits a mix of cafes, retail outlets and offices on the ground floors, with apartments on the upper levels.

LandCorp general manager Stuart Nahajski said the potential developer was working through the details.

“We continue to work closely with the city council on the Koombana North project and hope to be in a position to update the city council and the local member within the next couple of months, ” she said.

“The first phase of the Koombana North project has already been completed — this was the development and beautification of the foreshore area, including the Ski Beach.

“The timing for the next built form phase of the Koombana North project is subject to the outcome of discussions with the potential developers, who would of course subsequently need to obtain the appropriate building approvals.”The first of the blocks for sale were put on the market in November last year.

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said at a public function on Monday he hoped to hear about the development by the end of the year.

Mr Brennan told the South Western Times he looked forward to Landcorp making an announcement and hopefully a developer proceeding with the purchase and ultimate development of one or more lots.

“The opportunities that have been present in Bunbury and the South West are starting to be realised, ” he said.

“It is an exciting time to be in Bunbury with so much happening such as the recent MOU signing between the Vue Group, Shanghai Hippo, South West Development Commission and the City of Bunbury.”
