Speedway icon and Bunbury Toyota dealer principal Shane Krikke’s legacy continued in the weekend’s Relay for Life as the team he previously captained raised a record amount.

Bunbury Toyota Racing for a Cure contributed more than $88,000 to the annual cancer fundraiser, with much of that coming from a wine dinner at Vat 2 and a request for donations in lieu of flowers at Mr Krikke’s funeral earlier this year.

Mr Krikke’s widow Jodie took over as team captain for the event at Payne Park, which features a 24-hour walking event and has raised more than $183,000 in Bunbury this year.

“Cancer is something that touches too many people’s lives and we need to get on top of it to find a cure,” Mrs Krikke said.

“It was a good, fun weekend and we know the money is definitely making a difference locally.

“Last year we raised about $64,000 and this year was quite a phenomenal amount and was very heart warming.

“I know Shane would be very humbled and very proud.”

Mrs Krikke encouraged people to get involved in next year’s Relay for Life, saying it gave participants a chance to hear the stories of those affected by cancer and realise the difference being made by South West service providers.
