A race with a difference will take place for the first time in Australia this weekend and the Collie Motorplex will be the testing ground.

Car enthusiasts and fun-loving drivers are being encouraged to take place in the first-ever 24 Hours of Lemons event this Saturday and Sunday, where for 12 hours a day a number of pre-used vehicles or “lemons” will race around the speedway track to raise money for prostate cancer research.

Each car participating must have cost the owner $999 or less.

The event comes from the United States, where each year on one weekend 150 to 200 cars across 36 locations get decorated to a theme, with a team of drivers to match.

Organiser Sean Herbert said this weekend, driving would begin at sunrise and finish at sundown.

“It’s all about the fun,” he said.

“It is not to be taken seriously except for the safety aspect.”

Mr Herbert said he expected about 15 to 20 cars to participate this weekend and he would organise more events in the future.
