Library volunteers start new chapters

South Western Times

Bunbury Primary School farewelled long-time volunteers Yvonne Davies and Janet Guest with a morning tea on Tuesday.

Ms Davies, 75, and Ms Guest, 70, were presented with certificates in recognition of the more than 20 years of service to the school’s library.

Ms Davies retired as the school’s library officer in 1993, but found herself back among the books as a once-a-week volunteer in 1998.

“Having worked full time in the library I know how busy it can get and that extra bodies are always welcome,” she said.

“I’ve been involved with the school on and off for over 20 years now so it’s like a big family to me.

“They’ve supported me through some tough periods in my own life so it’s been wonderful to be able to give something back.”

Ms Guest began volunteering at the school six years ago after being invited by Ms Davies.

“Working with the kids is a laugh and keeps you on your toes and the school has provided a great support network and sense of belonging,” Ms Guest said.

“I had no previous connection with the school but they’re always looking for volunteers and I’d definitely encourage anyone thinking about donating their time to get involved.”

Ms Davies said volunteering was a great way to keep the mind and body active.

“Especially for older people or retirees who might not get as much social interaction as they’d like,” she said.

Bunbury Primary School associate principal Franca Dillon thanked Ms Davies and Ms Guest for their time and effort.

“Yvonne and Janet have provided a remarkable service to the library and we’re all sad to see them go,” she said.

“Schools are always on the lookout for helping hands and would love to hear from anyone who could donate some of their time.”
