Forrest MHR Nola Marino has urged her party to “get on with the job” of governing following a failed challenge of Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s leadership.

This morning, the spill motion was defeated 61 to 39 during a party room meeting in Canberra.

The motion to change the leader came after weeks of discontent from backbench MPs about Mr Abbott’s performance as Prime Minister.

In her first comments on the leadership troubles, Mrs Marino said she would get on with the job of representing the South West.

“I intend to continue representing the interests of my local community in Canberra, as I did in Opposition under a Labor Government and still do today,” she said.

“I also remain committed to getting out into the community of the South West region, and talking to the people, the families, and the small business owners who make the South West the great place it is today.

“We need to get on with the job, and deliver good governance to all of Australia, and I look forward to working to that end.”

Ms Marino welcomed Mr Abbott to Bunbury on November 2 – the first visit to the city by a Prime Minister since 1988.
