Bunbury will be lit up with lanterns on October 7 for the Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night walk.

The annual nationwide event raises money for those fighting to beat blood cancer, which is claiming the life of one Australian every two hours.

Registrations are now open for the walk and organisers are encouraging walkers to start fundraising now to help reach the West Australian target of $220,000.

Bunbury host Elizabeth Hovey said organisers were hoping to expand this year’s event onto the water of the Leschenault Inlet.

“It’s such a perfect location, so we’re asking clubs around the inlet to get their boats out on the water with lanterns and take part,” Mrs Hovey said.

Lanterns will be provided for those who register for the walk, with a gold lantern representing remembering a loved one, white for an individual’s own blood cancer journey and blue to support others.

Eaton Lions Club will be supplying food at the event while the Festival Brass Brand will entertain walkers.

Mrs Hovey said the fundraising event was crucial for those fighting blood cancer who relied on charities like the Leukaemia Foundation.

“You never know when blood cancer will affect your life or the lives of someone you love, so now is the time to stand up to help others,” she said.

The event starts at 5.30pm at the Bunbury and Districts Power Boat Club and people can register at the Light the Night website.
