South West traffic police will be out in force this long weekend and are warning road users to do the right thing.

Double demerits kick in from midnight tonight and run throughout the WA Day long weekend.

South West traffic police will start their operation tomorrow targeting the “fatal five”, according to officer-in-charge Sgt Craig Clarke.

Sgt Clarke said police will be out in force with the help of the Traffic Enforcement Group from Perth, with a focus on main highways.

“We understand the majority of people will be visiting, but people that are here need to adhere to the usual messages,” he said.

“Don’t speed, plan your route, don’t drink and drive and don’t take drugs.

“And don’t just do the right thing yourself, but ensure that others around you are as well.

The fatal five are mobile phone use, drink or drug driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, fatigue and speeding.
