Man collapses in ideal time, place

JOSH ZIMMERMANSouth Western Times

An elderly man who collapsed outside SKG Radiology has its staff – as well as Bunbury resident Jane Goff – to thank for being alive.

The man was walking along Spencer Street two weeks ago when he fell in a big puddle just outside SKG Radiology.

In a stroke of incredible fortune, Jane Goff, director of Corporate First Aid – which provides first aid training for individuals and companies – happened to be driving by.

“I saw a man lying in a puddle face down and immediately knew something was wrong,” Ms Goff said.

By the time Ms Goff had pulled over and ran to the man, SKG Radiology staff had been alerted to the situation and had also rushed to help.

“We turned him over and he looked grey and was barely breathing,” Ms Goff said.

“We shouted for someone to call an ambulance and started taking it in turns performing CPR.

“SKG had a defibrillator on the premises which they brought out but we were hesitant to use it because the man was soaking wet.

Ms Goff, as well as SKG Radiology’s Rosa Baggetta, Harriet Kersten and Dr Paul Van Zyl, continued to perform CPR until paramedics arrived.

“When the ambulance got here they decided it was safe to use the defibrillator,” Ms Goff said.

“The man regained consciousness pretty much straight away and was able to speak with us at the scene.

“I went to see him in hospital a few days later and he was very thankful.

“He was very lucky, he couldn’t have picked a better time and place to collapse.”
