Perth-based bluesy-rock outfit Marmalade Mama have been developing their music and style since forming in May last year.

The three-piece have blended new and old styles to create a distinctive sound, with the likes of Tame Impala and The Black Keys to Muddy Waters and B.B. King influencing the group.

Marmalade Mama includes former Bunbury Catholic College students Patrick Smith and younger brother Brendan, with Tom Cremasco rounding out the trio.

Patrick takes lead vocals and bass duties, while Brendan is on the drums and Tom plays guitar.

Patrick said the band’s music had advanced dramatically throughout their first year but it was still a work in progress.

“It comes from the old blues and rock and roll kind of thing but there is the psych movement going through Perth at the moment which is unavoidable so that catches on a bit as well,” Smith said.

“We are trying to progress with the writing and play as much new stuff as we can.

“We are becoming better musicians. We all started out ordinary but we are getting more confident writing and performing.”

Marmalade Mama have been busy playing gigs throughout Perth and are set to make their first South West appearance when they take the Prince of Wales Hotel’s stage tomorrow night.

Smith said it would be great to debut at the iconic venue while supporting fellow Perth-based outfit The Southern River Band.

“Having watched a lot of bands on stage at the Prince and now being able to get up there it will be full of excitement and beers,” he said.

“The Southern River Band put on an awesome live show too – plenty going on and I am sure they’ll have some wild costumes.

“We have played with them a fair bit up in Perth and they are great blokes who play some serious rock and roll – it will be a great night for sure.”

Marmalade Mama have already scheduled their next Bunbury visit to support renowned WA alternate rock group Eskimo Joe at VAT2 on December 9.
