Master on new tour

Bunbury’s John Trela has been selected to represent Australia at the 2019 WICF Masters World Series in South Africa.

Competing in the Over 50s division, Trela has furthered his passion for cricket by mastering the indoor form of the game.

Hours before jumping on his South African Airways flight from Perth, Trela outlined some of variables which must be taken into account when playing indoor cricket.

“The speed and a solid skill set are also very important,” he said.

“It is a fast-paced sport which really rolls out until the last over.”

Trela, who will be representing Australia for the third time at WICF Masters World Series level, believes the home side will be hard to beat.

“Being the home nation, South Africa will probably be up there alongside New Zealand,” he said.

“We have had great battles against those two nations and I think they will both bring quality players to the tournament.”

Prior to his departure, Trela has been working hard during training and games, in order to be at the top of his game.

“In Australia, we play our national indoor competition in May,” he said.

“It was held in Adelaide and for us (WA) it was great, because we won the national championship for the Over 50s.

“And in doing that, we had a number of players selected in the Australian side, which is good for WA cricket.

“I have also been lucky enough to have a few sessions with Daron Stenhouse at the Bunbury Indoor Cricket Centre, which I have appreciated.

“Normally as well, I will have a lot of gym sessions along with trips to Perth in between to train with the local guys who are representing Australia.”

Trela hopes more outdoor players will get involved with indoor cricket moving forward, as he believes the skills can greatly enhance a player’s overall ability across all forms of the game.
