Friends of Ian “Jock” Marshall are in shock after the Manjimup man was killed in a truck rollover on Tuesday.

Mr Marshall, 68, died after he was trapped in a Department of Parks and Wildlife fire truck on Perup Road, about 40km from Manjimup, on Tuesday afternoon.

He had worked for the department for about 50 years and had lost an eye during a golf game a few years ago.

His friends yesterday described him as a down-to-earth man who enjoyed socialising.

“He was a very considerate and kind person, ” his friend Fran Potito said.

“He was always helpful to everyone if they needed it. He was always joking around, even when things were down.”

Mr Marshall was a regular at Alf’s Continental Store which was owned by Ms Potito’s family.

She said her dad Alf and Mr Marshall had a running joke about getting a “10 per cent” discount.

His wife Inez worked at the Manjimup store until it closed about two weeks ago.

Mr Marshall was a member of the Manjimup Country Club and had played golf at the course last weekend.

“He loved his golf, there is no two ways about it, ” club secretary Ray Curo said.

Mr Marshall was also a West Coast Eagles supporter and enjoyed the banter with rival football fans.

“He was a cheeky bugger and we all liked him – he will be sorely missed, ” Mr Curo said.

His friend Doug Edwards said losing an eye had not stopped Mr Marshall from enjoying golf.

“We always knew when Jock was around, ” he said. “He would give us a bit a clip around the ears and pretend it was someone else.”

Police were yesterday investigating the cause of the crash.

The truck was towed to Bunbury yesterday after the preliminary investigation at the crash site.

Manjimup officer-in-charge Sgt Paul Williams said the cause of the crash was still unknown.

It is believed the trucks had been filled with water before the crash.

“We are still waiting for the vehicle to be examined and the post mortem results, ” Sgt Williams said.

Police were also investigating if diesel on the road contributed to the crash.
