Mat's boys are back

The Beautiful Girls’ singer-songwriter Mat McHugh has had a roller-coaster past 12 months, mixed with success and set-backs.

After the release of his solo project Waves in October last year, McHugh was enjoying a national tour to promote the album’s release.

However, at the height of the tour a crippling spinal injury caused McHugh’s wave to come crashing to an abrupt halt.

The talented musician, who had been suffering back discomfort, had a ruptured disc in his neck and a chipped bone in his back.

The injury forced McHugh to cancel the remainder of the shows and begin immediate rehab.

“I’ve just been spending five days a week working on the injury so I can be fresh and get back into it, ” he said.

“I’ve been working really hard and I have come a long way by just looking after myself.”

McHugh and The Beautiful Girls are currently in the middle of their national Summer Sound System tour, rocking Byron Bay to Bunbury and everywhere in between.

Playing the Summer Sound System shows is a personal milestone for McHugh, marking his return to the stage since cancelling the Waves tour.

The back injury still prohibits McHugh from playing the guitar but he said the group was enjoying playing as a unit.

“The Beautiful Girls have a lot of songs and a lot to choose from, ” he said.

The band has four upcoming shows in WA, including one at the Prince of Wales Hotel on Sunday.
