Bunbury is preparing to welcome the first Liberal Prime Minister to visit the city in 35 years.

Coalition leader Tony Abbott is scheduled to visit on Sunday and is likely to watch the finishing stages of the Relay for Life event at Payne Park.

He will be in Albany on Saturday as part of the Anzac centenary celebrations but it is understood Mr Abbott’s visit to Bunbury was sought by Forrest MHR Nola Marino.

Mr Abbott will be the city’s first Liberal Prime Minister to visit since Malcolm Fraser in 1979. Numerous Bunbury residents, including Mayor Gary Brennan, have also been invited to a morning tea which will be attended by Mr Abbott and about 200 guests.

Mr Brennan said he was delighted at the prospect of Mr Abbott’s visit.

“I have been given a little slot to welcome him to Bunbury,” Mr Brennan said.

“I will be having a few words with him and look forward to meeting him.”

Bunbury Chamber of Commerce and Industries chief executive officer Ray Philp was excited about the Prime Minister’s visit.

He said it was important to take advantage of the opportunity to have any politician in Bunbury to explain to them the priorities of the region.

“I think it is great to see the Prime Minister in the area,” he said.

“What the outcome will be remains to be seen.

“But there won’t be outcomes if he isn’t here.”
