The South West can lay claim to the State’s best mother with Dalyellup mum of six Amanda Draper winning the Barndardos WA Mother of the Year title.

Announced at amorning tea yesterday, Mrs Draper took out the award ahead of two other finalists at a ceremony in Perth.

Presented with her award by Women’s Interests Minister Robyn McSweeney, Mrs Draper said she was shocked by the win.

‘‘There are many amazing mums out there doing incredible work and I feel very privileged to have been chosen to represent Western Australia,’’ Mrs Draper said.

Mrs Draper is a single mother who looks after six children, including two non-biological children, from the ages of three to 11.

She is also a university lecturer, high school maths teacher and is studying for a PhD into the difficulties that mothers face at university trying to juggle their many roles.

Mrs Draper said the best thing about being a mother was watching her children flourish.

‘‘Watching your children grow and letting them know that they have every opportunity open to them (is great).’’

Mrs McSweeney congratulated Mrs Draper on her win and commended the finalists.

‘‘The women nominated for these awards are inspirational role models,’’ she said.

‘‘I congratulate Amanda and each of the Western Australian finalists for the devotion and commitment they have shown to so many children in need.

‘‘Barnardos also deserves our thanks and support for highlighting the important role of mothers in our community.’’

Mrs Draper won a baby gift pack, a digital television, a digital camera, an automatic tea maker and kettle, a chocolate hamper, a flower arrangement, a Sydney Harbour dinner cruise, a framed certificate and trophy and accommodation in Sydney to attend the national announcement gala dinner on May 5.
