Bunbury is the first place in Australia to see a national touring exhibition of art quilts.

Ozquilt Network chose the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries on Friday night to launch its Australia Wide Five exhibition, which will soon spend two years travelling around Australia.

There are 37 pieces in the exhibition, all of which are 40cm by 40cm in size and president Margery Goodall said this was a deliberate move.

“The most important reason is that they all have the same visual weight,” Mrs Goodall said.

“That is extremely important because we have a permanent online exhibition.

“For practical reasons, it also means the exhibition can travel in a box.”

Bunbury was chosen to launch the exhibition due to its tourist appeal and proximity to Perth, Mrs Goodall said.

Ozquilt Network is an Australian organisation but features members from all around the world.

The exhibition showcases the work of members and has been professionally selected by a three-person panel.

“About half is by people who have exhibited before and the others are exhibiting for the first time,” Mrs Goodall said.

“For them, it is fantastic feedback that what they are doing is valued and important.”

The galleries will host a talk on October 15 when some of the artists will explain the creative processes behind their quilts.

All the pieces will be on display until November 6.
