School holidays have arrived, and with it comes yet another animated offering to help keep the little ones entertained over those long, hot summer days.

The good thing about the majority of animated films is that as well as the heart-warming goodness that endears the films to children, there is usually alsoa good dose of adult humourand innuendo to keep their parents entertained as well.

The problem with Dreamworks’ latest offering Megamind is that it seems just a little too geared towards youngadults and adults sot hat the younger set seem to have been completely forgotten.

The film follows supervillain Megamind (voiced by Will Ferrell) who has been enemies with superhero Metro Man (BradPitt) since birth.

Metro Man has always been one step ahead of Megamind, whether it be in a game of dodge ball at primary school or in one of the duo’s many battles in their home town of Metro City.

One day, Megamind hatches a plot to take down Metro Man once and for all and to his surprise, it actually works.

However he realises that his life as a supervillain is pointless without a superhero to fight, so he goes about turning a TV news cameraman (Jonah Hill) into his new foe, Titan, but things don’t go to plan.

The film pushes the message that good and evil cannot exist without each other but also shows us that although someone may be completely evil on the surface, there maybe something good lurking underneath.

Sound familiar?

If you’ve seen Despicable Me, it should.

The two have blatantly similar plots and unfortunately for Megamind, Despicable Me did it first and did it better.

Megamind himself is nowhere near as likeable as Gru from Despicable Me so audiences do not feel the sympathy for him that they may have for Gru.

And, lo and behold, both supervillains have minions.

Gru had his army of cute minions while Megamind has a minion named — you guessed it— Minion.

The only thing that Megamind does better is on the technological side — the 3D is some of the best I have seen in a film, animated or otherwise.

If you love 3D movies, this is definitely one of the best on offer at the moment and is more than worth the extra couple of dollars it costs to experience it on the big screen.

The plot is just a little too mature for very young ones, so unless you think they’ll be happily amused by things flying out from the screen and a cute talking fish (although not in the Nemo sense), it would perhaps be best to give this one a miss.
