The City of Bunbury has appointed Queenslander Andrew Brien as its new chief executive officer.

Mr Brien, who was chosen from 34 applicants, comes from the Fraser Coast Council in Queensland which includes Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

Bunbury Mayor David Smith said Fraser Coast Council was created in 2007 by the amalgamation of four shire councils, Hervey Bay City Council, Maryborough City Council and Tiaro Shire Council.

"Effectively Mr Brien oversaw the Fraser Coast amalgamation, and can speak with authority on the issues that flow from amalgamation," he said today.

Fraser Coast is the 13th largest local government authority in Queensland, with more than 750 staff and an annual budget of $110 million.

Mr Brien will be required to give three months notice to the Fraser Coast Council and is not expected to start in Bunbury until April.
