Completing homework in a structured environment is now a reality for primary school students in Withers.

A “homework club” based at Withers Community Library is giving students a place to do their homework once a week under the guidance of a teacher.

The concept has come about thanks to a partnership between the South West Development Commission and Milligan Community Learning and Resource Centre.

The commission’s Withers place manager, Deanna Furze, said there was a gap in the market for the service.

“First and foremost, Australian early development data for the area shows children could use some assistance in a range of fields, ” she said.

“It became evident students could use a place once a week to do their homework that is cool in summer and warm in winter.

“It also aims to foster the library as a welcoming place and hopefully encourage students to come down another time as well.”

Despite being dubbed a homework “club” there is no formal requirement to register or commit on a regular basis, nor is there any cost involved.

Ms Furze said while it was targeted at students from schools in the Withers area, it was open to all primary school students.

“Students don’t have to do structured homework, we are happy for them to do silent reading.

“It is not just for studious or academically-gifted students either — anyone looking for a quiet place to sit and focus and do their homework is welcome.”

A school teacher has been employed outside of regular school hours to ensure students are always able to get help about topics they are unsure about.

The sessions will run every Wednesday between 3pm and 5pm at Withers Community Library.
