New Donnybrook play upgrade all inclusive

South Western Times

New and exciting playground equipment specifically designed for children with disabilities will be launched at the Donnybrook Apple Fun Park this weekend.

Royalties for Regions funded the $630,000 project, which according to the Donnybrook-Balingup shire chief executive officer John Attwood, was in support of the council’s Disability Access Inclusion Plan.

“The funding has been much appreciated, as has the support of the region’s councils, without them this would not be possible,” he said.

Mr Attwood said the extensions to the playground were designed to be used by all children, but were crucial to allowing children with disabilities and their families to be included in the fun of the park.

He said the new equipment included a wheelchair accessible see-saw and dizzy-wizzy, as well as an interactive sound zone to help develop the children’s coordination.

Mr Attwood said the funding also included extensions to the toilets and carpark, with ACROD specific bays and bus bays.

Tenielle Moore’s daughter Clarissa, 9, has talipes and displaced hips which hinder her ability to use the existing playground because she struggled to climb.

Mrs Moore said Clarissa’s hips would stay displaced until she was at least 21, but for now she was grateful of the new equipment.

The new colourful equipment will be officially opened by Warren-Blackwood MLA Terry Redman on Saturday at 10am with a free community event to feature a Lions Club sausage sizzle.
