Not-for-profit organisation Doors Wide Open launches new outreach project thanks to donation from CSBP
A Bunbury outreach service has been given a funding boost that will help them launch a new project aimed at reconnecting people to their community.
CSBP Bunbury has donated $5000 to Doors Wide Open to help with their latest project for repurposing pallets.
The not-for-profit organisation, which provides support to people recovering from drug and other addictions, will be using the pallets to build seats, garden furniture and garden beds.
“The aim of this project is to encourage people to gain skills in something new, particularly people recovering from drug and alcohol dependency,” Doors Wide Open chair Tyril Houghton said.
“We’re so grateful to CSBP for providing these funds.”
Mrs Houghton said the past two years of COVID restrictions and lockdowns have caused a lot of people to feel disconnected, which was especially hard for people trying to recover from addiction who may not have been able to build good support networks around themselves yet in their journey to recovery.
“Often when you have a dependency you can withdraw from society,” she said.
“This is a way of getting people to re-engage. You can be yourself here.”
She said the project is open to anyone who wants to drop in to the Forrest Avenue premises between 10am and 2pm, Monday to Friday.
“Post-COVID a lot of people are feeling really lonely,” she said.
“At Doors Wide Open we have the opportunity to reconnect people with agencies that can help them.
“For every person that can be supported in this way hopefully that is a family that can stay intact.”
The centre will also be hosting their Monster Garage Sale on October 29 and 30, from 8am-2pm.
