Novocaines' life on stage

JACKIE COFFINSouth Western Times

Perth band The Novocaines are heading to town to play the Prince next week and although they may be a bit worn out from their busy schedule, rest assured they’re still going to rattle the rafters of Bunbury’s favourite punk rock venue.

Kicking off the year in true Aussie summer style with gigs at Southbound and the Big Day Out, the band followed up with a trip to the United States, playing shows at the Holy Grail of music festivals, South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.

‘‘It’s definitely been a crazy year so far,’’ drummer LiamY oung said.

‘‘South by Southwest was by far the best two weeks of my life to date, I wish we could go every year,’’ he said.

Young said the band was just about ready to come home when they got the news that their 2009 hit Cup of Coffee had been added to the soundtrack of teen horror satire Scream 4.

‘‘We signed the EP to a music distribution company a ong time ago and thanks to them we’ve appeared a few different tv shows,’’ Young said.

‘‘But now we’re on the Scream 4 soundtrack, which is huge.’’

The Novocaines are also enjoying high rotation on quite a few American college radio stations, something Young believed had come as a result of the band’s exposure on television and the big screen, as well as the gigs they played earlier in the year.

‘‘I’d say its a combination of everything,’’ he said.

Following an amazing start to the year, the last half of 2011 has been set aside for recording, mixing and promoting their first full-length release.

Understandably, Young said the band was keen to get started.

‘‘This is the first time we’ve been really prepared for the recording process,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s like all the hard work is finally paying off.’’

Young said the band was aiming to release the album before the end of the year, giving them enough time for touring and promotion.

‘‘Touring is tiring, I’m always tired,’’ he said.

‘‘But there’s no way I’d rather be doing anything else.’’

You can catch The Novocaines live and loud at the Prince of Wales Hotel on Thursday, July 7.
