On the couches with diverse youth

LESLEE HALLSouth Western Times

The stories of people affected by gender and sexuality issues are available to the public through a recently completed project.

Two couches, containing the recordings of stories from youth, their families and social workers affected by gender issues were launched on Friday.

Community spaces to host them are now being sought.

The couches were given makeovers by members of True Colours — a group for same-sex attracted and gender diverse youth run by UnitingCare West — and they have recorded their stories into audio systems inside the couches.

UnitingCare West community and youth services manager Vicki Barry said the project allowed True Colours members to address the challenges they experienced while coming to terms with their sexuality and gender.

“These couches represent their place in the community, having some visibility in the community and having their voices heard,” she said.

“Their stories affirm what our program means to them, to have a safe space where they can come together — they don’t feel alone and isolated.”

She said they were looking for organisations and agencies willing to host one of the couches so the stories could be shared in the community.

The True Colours group has been working with artist Lewis Horne on the project since December to put their own stamp on the couches.

Ms Barry said the project had brought the group closer together and helped develop new skills.

“It’s been fun — a lot of sweat and a few tears,” she said.

Agencies wishing to host the couches can contact Sharon Waters at UnitingCare West on 0400 972 482.
