Panthers overrun courageous Lions for Anzac win

RILEY STUARTSouth Western Times

Livewire forwards Cody Garlett and Arron Hill both booted five-goal hauls to spearhead Carey Park to a 12-point Anzac Day victory over Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault.

Gartlett, who played in the reserves in round one, proved a point on the field by starring in the 17.12 (114) to 15.12 (102) triumph in front of a healthy crowd at Kelly Park.

Hill was also a forward focal point, slotting two clutch majors in the final term when the game was in the balance.

The Panthers trailed by 19 points at half-time but hit their straps in the third quarter, slashing the margin to less than one straight kick by the final change.

The home side then edged ahead in a fourth term shootout in which the result remained in doubt deep into red time.

Lukas Teague slotted two goals for the visitors and Jarrad Watson finished the afternoon with four classy majors for HBL.

After a disappointing opening round defeat to Donnybrook the Lions found form around the ground and dictated the play for large chunks of the afternoon.

John Klumpp was outstanding while Watson, teenaged-tyro Ethan Hughes and Lukas Teague all found plenty of the ball.

Scott Delmenico won his duel against Panthers full-forward Matthew Martin while former West Coast Eagles rookie Llane Spaanderman dominated the hit-outs for HBL.

Coyne did some good things for the Panthers while Hill and Garlett always looked dangerous. Brendan Carlson and Jake Omara also worked hard.

Earlier, a switched on Lions' outfit scooted to a 19-point quarter time advantage.

Garlett was lively up forward as Carey Park made a fist of the contest in the second term.

After a flat first half performance, the home side burst from the rooms to start the third term with two quick goals.

The Lions steadied and restored their advantage but the home team kept coming.

When Garlett booted his fourth and Hill soccered his third on the line, the Panthers hit the front for the first time.

The lead was short-lived however, when HBL young-gun Braden Prentice goaled on the three-quarter time siren to hand his team a three-point lead.

Despite being in front for most of the afternoon, the brave Lions were eventually out-gunned by their hosts.
