Staff at the Bunbury Wildlife Park are in mourning after the death of one of its iconic characters, Wombles the Wombat.

Their furry friend died on Tuesday last week when she was put to sleep after battling illness.

Originally from South Australia, she had called the park home for about six years.

Acting park manager Lucy Wiseman said it was a sad time for the park and the community who had got to know Wombles.

“We were heartbroken to have to say goodbye,” Mrs Wiseman said.
