People power has won out in Burekup following Dardanup Shire Council's decision to move a bus stop.

The council put up signs on Russell Road in April to limit a section of parking outside the Burekup General Store for only buses in the mornings and afternoons.

Store owner Rob Self created a petition, which attracted almost 500 signatures against the decision, and the council decided at a September 2 meeting to move the bus stop adjacent to the Burekup Hall.

Mr Self told the _South Western Times _in April he understood why the signs had been put up but he was concerned it would create safety issues and affect his business.

He said he was pleased the council made the decision to move the bus stop away from his store.

"We had 490 signatures and we could have got more but I thought that I got my point across and I'm happy the bus zone will be moved," he said.

"There was a crash involving a car and a bus recently so this needed to happen but I'm glad the council is moving the bus stop where I proposed it should be because I think it was a no-brainer."

Mr Self said he believed the decision to move the bus stop would help people who had struggled to get parking at the store in the past.

"The last thing I'd like to see happen is the school zone extended along Russell Road to include the new bus stop," he said.

Dardanup shire president Mick Bennett said a directive would be sent to the council's engineering department to move the bus stop.

"It will become a part of their program and I think it will be moved within the next month," Cr Bennett said.

"The council had no problem with moving the bus stop because there were so many children catching buses and it was getting out of hand so there needed to be a change.

"I don't think Rob needed to get so many signatures, he just needed to talk to us for this decision to be made."
