Pillow cases will be turned into dresses for African girls at a Bunbury workshop today.

Art Partners are again running the Little Dresses for Africa workshop, which the group’s program officer Wanda Ariano said was becoming a “ritual”.

The high cost of international postage meant the program stopped after 2013 but it was revived last year.

“There seems to be some resonance with this project,” Ms Ariano said.

“The opportunity to respond to a reputed international cause is quite inspiring and the dresses are quite simple to sew.

“Anybody who has basic sewing skills or an interest can be involved as this is a great starter project.”

Tuesday’s workshop coincides with the United Nations International Day of the Girl Child.

“It is great to have rituals that you do every year and this is something that is becoming a ritual.

“When people come together to do a community activity, it is very rewarding.”

There were about 100 pillowcases donated by Lorraine Lea linen last year and about half of these remain, meaning plenty of dresses can be made.

The workshop will be held between 1pm-3pm at Stirling Street Arts Centre. Registration is free and can be made by contacting Ms Ariano on 0429 918 711.
