Player shoots for the top

Promising soccer player Angeline Wright has the world at her feet – literally every day – as she aims to establish a professional senior career.

The Bunbury Cathedral Grammar student, who shone for the South West Firebirds towards the end of their campaign, has been picked up by Football West’s Hyundai NTC girls program for the 2020 season.

As part of her selection, Angeline will be required to attend multiple sessions in Perth, along with playing commitments.

However, the news has not fazed the 14-year-old, who completes every task on and off the pitch with a broad smile.

“I was playing with the South West Phoenix under 14 boys team at the start of the season,” she said.

“And then half way during the season, I was asked to come and play with the Firebirds.

“But definitely playing with the boys and women’s teams this year has really fast-tracked my development.”

Angeline, a striker who prides herself on positioning and working diligently on her shooting, successfully negotiated her way through a rigorous trial process.

“NTC trials came up and I just decided to give it a go,” she said.

“It was really intense though because there were a lot of really good girls trialling.

“The coaches look more for skill, first touch and main parts of soccer.

“It was a full week of trials so it was around late October that I found out. I have completed two sessions with them so far.”

Off the pitch, Angeline loves all things sport.

“I love doing athletics and I actually used to be a sprinter when I was younger,” she said.

“But I started to get a few injuries, so I decided to take up soccer.”

Academically, Angeline has developed a solid passion for sports science and has not ruled out learning about physiotherapy in future.
