Playground to provide accessible fun

South Western Times

A playground designed to encourage interaction for children of all abilities will soon be open near Bunbury’s Big Swamp.

The City of Bunbury’s $310,000 accessible playground will be opened next month and students from two schools yesterday put the finishing touches on the area.

The playground will be one of WA’s few accessible playgrounds.

It will feature equipment such as a carousel, an aero-glider and three slides for different levels of capability.

Newton Moore Senior High School and College Row School students planted trees yesterday to help complete the area’s landscaping.

City of Bunbury landscape architect Myles Bovell said the project had been a year in the making.

‘‘This will be one of the region’s first truly accessible playgrounds,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s so kids of different abilities can interact in a fun environment.

‘‘It’s all about inclusion.’’

The playground has been funded by the City of Bunbury, Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs and Royalties for Regions.

It is also sponsored by BHP Billiton Worsley Alumina, Iluka and WA Country Builders.

Mr Bovell said he was excited the playground would soon be open for use.

‘‘It’s been a great experience to see different groups coming together for the same project,’’ he said.

‘‘There’s already been lots of interest.’’
