Police call for witnesses after daytime attack

ERIENNE LETTESouth Western Times

Detectives have called for witnesses to a 'concerning' attack that left a 20-year-old Bunbury woman unconscious in a Marlston Hill street.

Bunbury Detectives Sen. Sgt Jon Munday said the woman was jogging on Baudin Terrace about 5.40pm when a man approached her and asked her for money.

When she told him she didn’t have any he punched her in the back of the head and punched her again when she fell to the ground.

The woman was found unconscious by another jogger a short time later and was taken to Bunbury Hospital before being released this morning.

Sen. Sgt Munday said it was a 'very concerning' attack.

``It’s also concerning that it’s such a brazen attack,’’ he said.

``She doesn’t remember much…she doesn’t remember going jogging.

``She’s just very shaken and I think she’s still just trying to digest what’s happened.’’

This is the second unprovoked attack on someone after an 88-year-old Bunbury man was bashed with a baseball bat while on an early morning walk in February.

The man was walking along Hamilton Road in Eaton when a car pulled up along side him and the passenger got out and asked for money.

When the man told him he didn’t have any he was attacked with a baseball bat.

It is not believed the incidents are linked.

Sen. Sgt Munday said there was limited information about the event and urged any witnesses to contact police.

``We’re obviously asking for anybody that knows anything about the offence, saw anything or as seen anybody acting suspiciously in the area to contact police,’’ he said.

``We are going to need assistance from the public on this one.’’

It is believed the man was wearing a dark coloured jumper.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
