Portrait Show puts face in Front Room

South Western Times

At 21 years-old, Sarah Mills specialises in the art of portraiture and is organising an exhibition to expose the rich culture of the art in the South West.

The Front Room Portrait Show begins tomorrow at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries – it features 22 portraits from 20 local artists.

Ms Mills, who is a member of the Front Room committee, said it was the first time a portrait exhibition had been run by the group.

“My ultimate aim is to run this show annually with the hope to revive the tradition of portraiture, ” she said.

“It is fun to see how excited the artists get, taking part in an opportunity that myself and the Front Room Gallery have created for them.”

Ms Mills said the exhibition was also an attempt to raise the status of the Front Room Gallery, which is an artist-run space.

“I can see this is only the beginning of a bright future for the Front Room and its dedicated current and future members, ” she said.

She said there had been a “huge response” to the call for artist submissions for the show and after a selection process only 60 per cent of entrants were chosen to be in the exhibition.

The Front Room Portrait Show opens to the public tomorrow and runs until March 8.

The official opening celebration, on February 22, is open to everyone.

The Bunbury Regional Art Galleries are open from 10am to 4pm daily.
