Quicker on four wheels

Bunbury quadbike rider Anthony Pearce produced an outstanding meet to claim the intermediate class title at the Australian Quad Motocross Championship this month.

Pearce, 17, showed his class at the two-day event at Maffra, Victoria, on October 13-14, powering to two wins and three second placings in a dominant display on his Suzuki.

The Bunbury Motorcyle Club member stormed ahead of his rivals — including WA’s ShaunWoodhead andMatt Robbins— on the Saturday, securing a first and second to take a four-point lead going into day two.

A win and two seconds on Sunday saw him charge 15 points clear of his nearest rival.

Pearce said fitness work and training throughout the season— and being able to race and get plenty of bike time — had paid off.

While the result might have appeared onesided, the well-spoken Bunbury teenager praised the standard of competition.

‘‘The racing was pretty fierce over there and the track was completely different to whatever I have ridden before, alotlonger and bigger,’’ Pearce said.

Finding a balance between work, training and racing was difficult.

‘‘I am pretty much training every night of the week in the gym, dieting and trying to get on my bike as many weekends in a row as I can — bike time is everything.

‘‘It does get pretty stressful but I definitely wouldn’t be doing it without mum and dad, and my sister as well.’’

Pearce plans to progress into the professional ranks next year on the back of his win.
