It is critical to reduce the stigma around mental health to save young lives, says youth support agency Headspace Bunbury.

The group has trained community advocates who can educate youth about recognising problem signs early.

Headspace community engagement officer Declan Mountford organised a nine-week program with a small group of teenagers.

"It is important to think about what we can do to improve youth mental health and reduce the stigma," Mr Mountford said.

"One of the key messages is there is no difference between a physical and mental illness and educating people about this can be a challenge, but integration long term is an important process."

Year 12 Bunbury Grammar student Eliza Lyon completed the course and said it was important to know how to access help and recognise the signs of anxiety and depression.

"This course has enabled me to have the skills to help make a difference with youth mental health," she said.
