Wellington Dam has been flagged as a water source worthy of Commonwealth investment in a Federal Government document focusing on the sustainability of the agriculture industry.

The mention of the dam in the Agricultural Competitiveness Green Paper has led to renewed hope for Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray that the water source could be made usable.

Earlier this month a Water Corporation report indicated the South West would outgrow its water supplies within 50 years.

Mr Murray believes restoring the Wellington Dam water supply for use by agriculture and industry and in time to be used as drinking water, would protect the Yarragadee Aquifer when water shortages arose in the future.

He said plans to make the water held in Wellington Dam usable had been successfully trialled, but money supplied by the Federal Government had been returned by the State.
