Search for helpers as Sail into Life training approaches

Organisers of a sailing program for people with disabilities are looking for volunteers.

The Rotary Sail into Life program — held at Koombana Bay Sailing Club — provides people living with disabilities the opportunity to learn how to sail.

The last sailing season finished in May — with 30 volunteers helping teach more than 100 participants — and the next season begins in October.

Project officer Sharon Kavanagh said she was eager to find more volunteers by the start of training in August.

“We need six people to volunteer during each training session,” she said.

There are plenty of different positions to choose from – you don’t need to have an experience, we provide the training.”

Ms Kavanagh said volunteering would be perfect for students, part-time workers, fly-in, flyout workers and retirees.

“By putting your hand up, volunteers can learn to sail, learn new skills and it’s a good social activity,” she said.

Emily Walker, 13, said she enjoyed volunteering because it was fun.

“By volunteering, I’m also doing something for the community,” she said.

Her brother Hamish, 15, said he had met a lot of new people by volunteering for Rotary Sail Into Life.

“It also gets you out of the house and enjoying things you wouldn’t normally get the chance to do,” he said.

Information sessions will be held for volunteers in August. To get involved, call Ms Kavanagh 0477 529 579.
