Shining a light on Noongar culture

South Western Times

Noongar culture will be promoted and taught in a fun way this month when the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries hosts its annual Too Deadly Family Fun Day.

On May 23 from 3pm to 7pm the gallery will host activities such as acting workshops by Lynette Narkle from The Sapphires, a community art project, face painting, cooking displays, community stalls and South West Aboriginal Medical Service health checks.

There will also be a performance by Jarred Wall of Jake and The Cowboys, a welcome to country dance and Kwobidak Yorgas Modelling.

The free community event aims to embrace and educate the wider community on indigenous art and culture in a family environment which can be enjoyed.

Bunbury Regional Art Galleries Noongar community development officer Megan Corby said the day was about embracing the arts and culture and showcasing the indigenous talent in the region.

“These events bring the community together and not only do we get the local community, but we get people from outside the community and international tourist come. It helps spread the cultural awareness, ” she said.

“It is also good to encourage community engagement not only in the arts but in the indigenous culture, I think a lot of the time in the media there is a lot of negative content about the indigenous culture and I think this is a good opportunity to put something positive out there.”
