Shorelines sets stage for free performances

Budding entertainers are getting ready to showcase their talents this weekend in venues scattered across Bunbury’s CBD for the Shore Lines Performance Festival.

Earlier this year writers and performers were asked to submit a piece of writing which could be performed in front of a live audience.

More than 100 entries were submitted, from which judges chose 24 pieces for the festival.

The Bunbury City Library, Collins Bookshop, Aspenz in the Kitchen, The Rose Hotel and Officeworks are among the venues hosting the free performances.

Manea Senior College teacher Les Pearce was awarded second place in the ‘‘open category’’ for his play, The Assessment.

‘‘I have acted before and I’ve been involved in the Stark Raven Theatre but I thought I’d have a go at writing,’’ he said.

‘‘The play, without giving too much away, dwells on what humans think about themselves.

‘‘It is a drama but there is also some moments of humour.’’

ABC SouthWest presenter Ron Tait and actor Michael McIntyre will star alongside Mr Pearce in the half-hour play.

Bunbury Mayor David Smith said the festival inspired creativity and encouraged more people to visit the region.

‘‘I honestly believe that Shore Lines provides these very different kinds of opportunities to recognise talent and encourage it and ensure its promotion both locally and further afield,’’ he said.

Shore Lines has been growing in popularity since it began in 2006.

It is attracting interest from emerging writers, playwrights and performers such as James Forte, who submitted a piece this year.
