Kingston residents have united to protect children living in the suburb from irresponsible drivers.

Wheelie bins around the suburb have been adorned with stickers urging drivers to slow down.

The stickers read "please slow down and keep our children safe" under the suburb's name.

Belinda Kemp from Riverside Signs floated the idea of customised stickers for Kingston and Treendale on Facebook a year ago.

The idea arose after Mrs Kemp saw a notification on social media by someone looking for a speed warning to put on their rubbish bin.

"I thought, I have everything I need to do something," she said.

"We had a huge response from people."

So far about 100 stickers have been plastered on bins in the suburb.

Treendale residents had also embraced the safety message and Galway Green stickers will be printed soon.

"I know it's not going to stop people being silly on the roads and it's not going to be a world changer but if it makes someone think for a split second and saves a life, that’s worth it," Mrs Kemp said.

Kingston Community Group president Pamela Griffiths said some streets and areas in the suburb had more stickers than others.

"There are more in the newer areas where there are lots of kids," she said.

Mrs Kemp also printed signs to put on lawns when children were playing near the street.

As the wheelie bins were only on the street once a week, Mrs Kemp said these warned people about children at other times.
