Slammers add depth to teams

Lincoln BertelliSouth Western Times

The Printsync South West Slammers have enhanced both their men’s and women’s playing rosters for the 2017 season with a number of signings.

Former New Zealand international and 2015 Slammers co-captain Kate Fielding has returned to the club after a season away and will provide increased leadership and defensive strength.

The guard is joined by 2012 championship winning Slammer Tori Dugan, who will also offer experience after playing college basketball in Canada.

In a further coup for the women’s side, who finished the 2016 season bottom of the table with a 2-20 record, their season MVP has recommitted.

Courtney Bayliss averaged 17 points and nine rebounds during her first season back after playing college hoops in the United States.

The men’s side has signed guard Michael Lay, who will be a playing assistant coach.

Lay has previously played for Perry Lakes Hawks and Geraldton Buccaneers and will work alongside former Hawks coach Charles Nix, who was announced as the new Slammers head coach earlier this month.

Slammers junior Chris Douglas has also signed on for next season.

The 200cm forward or centre spent the last two seasons playing in Victoria but has previously suited up for the Slammers SBL side, as recently as 2014.
