Slammers take two, but women not as lucky
The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers have seven wins from seven games after an Easter weekend to remember, defeating the Mandurah Magic and Goldfields Giants.
On Thursday night the Slammers travelled to the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre and defeated the Magic by 19 points.
Tre Nichols and Ty Harrelson both passed 20 points in the Slammers 113 to 94 win, but it was Jordan Hickert off the bench who was the star of the show.
Then on Saturday night the Slammers hosted the Goldfields Giants, who were yet to record a win, at the Eaton Recreation Centre.
The first-half was competitive, with both sides sharing the lead on numerous occasions.
The Slammers, who were playing their fourth game in eight nights, were looking tired, but came out a different team after half-time.
Outscoring the Giants 32 to 59 in the second half, the Slammers power-players clicked into gear to win the game 107 to 74.
In the women’s division it was not as great for the Slammers who have lost their first match for the year, going down to the Mandurah Magic by seven points on Thursday night.
The Slammers failed to stop Magic star Casey Mihovilovich, who was outstanding in scoring 34 points in her side’s 74 to 67 win.
The Slammers were up at quarter time, but failed to maintain the momentum for the next three quarters, as the Magic won the derby and kept their undefeated season going.
Slammers coach Darren Austin identified Mihovilovich as the star performer for the Magic before the game, but his side was unable to stop her as she dominated the game with five three-pointers and a shooting percentage 55 per cent.
