Lee Sorfleet guided Marist to a five-wicket win over Leschenault with an unbeaten half-century at Leschenault Turf on Saturday.

Sorfleet belted 72 not out, from 89 deliveries, as the Blues chased down the Green Caps’ 171-run target in the 37th over.

Leschenault won the toss and batted, but lost early wickets to be in strife following a blistering opening spell from Marist quick Alan Utterson, who claimed the first three wickets of the match, removing Josh Grime (0), Rodney Shemeld (seven) and captain Tom Buchanan (2).

Fellow opening bowler Matt Anderson then dismissed Jarrad Quinn for a hard-fought 21 to have the Green Caps reeling at 4-36.

Matt Buchanan and Kurt D’Agostino came to the crease and rallied to solidify Leschenault’s innings. However, the Green Caps’ tail failed to fire after Buchanan (32) and D’Agostino (57) departed and the side was bowled out for 170.

Marist failed to start the chase well, with Leschenault opening bowler Brody D’Agostino removing Blues’ openers Chris Laker (15) and Sam Roots (4).

Sorfleet made it his duty to stabilise the chase as he negotiated the Green Caps’ bowlers with ease when he strode to the crease at 2-26.

The experienced Blues campaigner smashed nine fours and one six in his dominant match-winning innings. Sorfleet combined with Anderson (42 not out) to reach the target with more than eight overs remaining to claim the side’s first win of the season.

Marist will set out to claim back-to-back wins against Dalyellup Beach at Forrest Park North this Saturday, while Leschenault take on Hay Park at Hay Park 1.
