Snap to it, urges film fest winner
It's lights, camera and action for high school students across the South West as they begin to put together short films as part of the CinefestOZ Film Festival.
Cinesnaps, the annual short film competition for South West students aged 13 to 18 years, encourages students to produce a film of three to five minutes in length, based on the theme ‘a twisted tale’.
Students have until July 24 to submit their entries for the competition, which culminates with live judging by Australian film industry figures, in front of more than 200 guests at a youth red carpet screening, during the CinefestOZ Film Festival week from August 26-30.
Former Manea Senior College student and 2014 Cinesnaps winner, Sophia Armstrong, said she almost did not take up the opportunity of taking part in the competition – but she was glad she did.
“Being able to meet industry professionals and be among people who share the same kind of goals and ideas reassured me that film-making does not only have to be a dream, it can be reality, ” she said.
“To any students thinking about taking part, I’d say ‘just do it’.
“It is not too hard and it’s a great experience.”
Ms Armstrong said she had been given the opportunity to meet people in the film industry such as Myles Pollard, Julius Avery, Marian Bartsch, Joel Edgerton and Robert Connolly.
CinefestOZ education officer Caroline Beamond said students entering the competition could expect to receive insights from Australian film industry professionals at film-maker workshops.
