South West hockey in fine form

South Western Times

Two whitewashes and a 4–1 result was the fare dished up by the South West Hockey League men last week.

While women’s attentions were focussed on the Robins-Boyanup blockbuster in Busselton on Sunday, Marist travel to Collie for a clash with the Coalminers while Associates and Exies locked horns in Bunbury.

Men’s interest centres on the log jam at the top of the points table with Marist, Wests and Boyanup all on 12 points from four wins each.

Biggest winners last week were Marist who accounted for out of touch early season leaders Wests 7-0, with Chris Mellor, Alby Lawrence and a hat-trick from skipper Andrew Blee the highlights.

Boyanup beat Collie 5-0 with Kane Wetherell slotting three goals to atone for their shock loss to Associates the week before.

Dan Trigwell and Kiel Tosana also capitalised on the abundant talents of Scott Medallist Jake Harvie and Coby Green, son of former Strikers skipper Steve Green.

Associates followed up their heady victory over the champions the week before with a workmanlike 4-1 win over Towns South with Matt Anderson (2) and Tom Atkinson on target courtesy of man-of-the-match David O’Brien, his brother Shaun and Sean Cowan.

Sunday’s men’s fixtures show Marist and West favoured to stretch their lead.
