South West take first win at Carnival

The South West Football League this morning had the perfect start to their 2015 Landmark Carnival campaign, defeating the Avon Football Association by 56 points at ATOM Stadium.

Eaton Boomers midfielder Jace Cormack kicked five goals in a dominant display as the SWFL kept their opposition goalless in the second half to win 12.5 (77) to 3.3 (21).

The AFA began in style when forward Daniel Negus put through the first goal of the game, but from there it was all SWFL.

The South West side kicked the next six goals to take a 19 point lead into the main break.

Cormack made the most of his roving opportunities in the first half, when a number of kicks missed forward Matt Martin.

Graham Jetta, Simon Parry and Hamish Shepheard dominated through the midfield, with Jetta winning his fair share of clearances.

Parry and Shepheard used their long kicking to their advantage, catching the Avon side out of position too often.

Negus and Wayne Otway both goaled just before half-time to keep them in the contest.

Avon came out in the second half and tried to make a contest of it, but the SWFL side’s class shone through.

Cormack began to mark anything which came into the forward 50, as the SWFL kicked six goals to none in the second half.

The SWFL now prepare to take on the Upper Great Southern Football League at 1.10pm.
