Swimming is a vital skill for anyone living in Australia and Special Olympics South West is highlighting the need by adding it to its list of programs.

The group's 2016 sporting program kicked off this month, encouraging people with intellectual disabilities to get involved in an array of sports.

The addition of swimming to its growing program is a first for the group's committee.

Chairwoman Allison Burnett said the committee recognised the need for athletes to learn the skill.

"Through discussion with athletes we identified there are a number who are unable to swim," she said.

"The committee felt it is an important skill for all people living in Australia and wanted to provide the opportunity for people with intellectual disability to learn."

The group has partnered with the South West Sports Centre and Little Lappers Swim School for the program, with qualified instructors passing on their skills to athletes.

With the program already underway, Ms Burnett said low numbers to date had been a "little disappointing".

"Attendance is not restricted to individuals who are members of Special Olympics. It is open to all people who would like to learn to swim in an inclusive environment," she said.

The group hopes to help athletes be safe in the water, increase their physical fitness, build friendships and provide pathways to competition through the program.

"There are also athletes who are able to swim, but need stroke correction," Ms Burnett said.

She said the group had experienced a "fantastic" start to the term through its weekly programs of tennis, golf, bocce and basketball.

The group's 2016 multisport day is scheduled for April 5 when more than 200 people are expected to participate.
