Speedway: Upgrades on track

South Western Times

A new tiered limestone viewing area on the main straight is under construction at the Coates Hire Bunbury Speedway — the centrepiece of some surprise redevelopments to spectator facilities at the track.

In an off-season facelift that speedway promotions manager Andrew Roberts described as ‘‘overdue,’’ a new canteen and disabled access area will also be constructed at the main grandstand.

The limestone area will replace existing log seating that dates back to the 1970s. Drivers are also set to benefit, with underground power access and pit lighting to be improved ahead of the new season.

Roberts said that the redevelopments had come about after some generous support from sponsors.

‘‘It’s only with the blokes who donate their labour and machinery thatwe are able to do this,’’ he said.

‘‘They can see the reasons why we’re getting it done and they can see the venue that we’re trying to create and they just want to make it happen.’’

Construction work will be completed by September and according to Roberts was just reward for fans.

‘‘Without the patrons’ help and the sponsors chipping in to help with the big shows we wouldn’t be able to do what we’re doing now,’’ he said.

‘‘When people come and offer their help it’s a direct return to the venue and you can’t say no.’’
